Intersolar Europe is the world’s leading exhibition for the solar industry and its partners and takes place annually at the Messe München exhibition center in Munich, Germany. The event’s exhibition and conference both focus on the areas of photovoltaics, solar thermal technologies, solar plants, as well as grid infrastructure and solutions for the integration of renewable energy. Since being founded 27 years ago, Intersolar has become the most important industry platform for manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, service providers and partners of the solar industry.
Our customers are hybrid energy sites equipped with genset, PV and/or Storage, of sizes between 10 KW to 10 MW. Some of them, mostly Commercial and Industrial buildings, are connected to a poor electricity grid. Others do not have access to the grid at all; Telecom towers, mini-grids, and resorts are often off-grid.
To ensure reliable power supply, they invest in diesel generators which consume a lot of fuel. That fuel is difficult to obtain in remote areas, and in many cases get stolen. Moreover, the energy produced by those gensets can cost up to six times more than the electricity from the grid. On top of that, these generators are very polluting since they have a large carbon footprint.
To reduce this high operating cost of diesel generator and to lower the carbon footprint, our customers are increasingly investing in cost-competitive solar panels and batteries. The management of the energy flows of such microgrids is complex and it requires to face several challenges.
The lack of compatibility between different hardware equipment such as diesel generators, local controllers, inverters of the solar panels and the batteries of different brands and ages are one of the first issues they must tackle. Improving the microgrids by renewing and replacing endlessly new assets or sites, isn't a viable solution.
Beyond the infrastructural concerns, microgrid customers have little visibility on their energy production, and consumption when they don't have a management controller software.
Elum energy has a solution to these challenges and provides advanced Plug & Play microgrid controllers with distributed intelligence. Elum provides ePowerBooster, which is a controller that the customers can plug on his existing hybrid system regardless of the brand.
Elum configures ePowerBooster from its offices in Paris and integrates the site data in the cloud. The software is based on Artificial Intelligence algorithms using also external data such as weather forecast.
The value proposition of the ePowerMonitor Software is not only high energy system reliability but more importantly decreased OPEX and increased ROI. By optimizing the operation of the diesel generators, such as reduced idling time, fuel costs are decreased by 10-20%.
Besides, by preventing reverse flow to the diesel generators and by optimizing the battery charge and discharge cycles, the material is better protected from degradation and the lifetime is increased. The software can reach solar penetration of up to 60%, also decreasing the carbon footprint considerably.
