Elum Energy would like to thank you all for your participation at the Microgrid Impact Challenge which was a success as we received more than 25 submissions of brilliant solar microgrid projects including BESS!
The MIC was organized as part of the ePowerControl ES/ES+ launch, our new controller dedicated to battery energy storage systems, and aimed at promoting innovative solar projects with strong socioeconomic and environmental impacts.
Amongst the submitted projects, 3 of them really stood out and caught the attention of Elum and our partners. Elum Energy would like to congratulate all the brilliant minds behind the submitted projects as the results were tight!
Together with ARE, AMDA, GOGLA and UL, we are proud to announce and congratulate the winners of this first edition of the Microgrid Impact Challenge!

Zuwa Energy is addressing energy poverty to improve the lives of Malawians and helping businesses to succeed through access to clean, better, reliable and affordable solar power. We achieve this in 2 ways: firstly, through leasing-to-own of Solar Home Systems, more than 20,000 people have lights at night, charge their phones, watch TV and keep perishable food longer and cooler every day.
The project’s general objective is to promote the development of rural electrification in Colombia in Non-Interconnected Zones through a microgrid consisting of a photovoltaic plant connected to the thermal generation and an energy storage system. It will benefit around 6,665 households in the Municipality of Puerto Leguizamo, which currently receive less than 6 hours of electricity per day.
It will have a profound social and environmental impact on the community through the following means:
DUE Capital and Services SAS is an active player in the renewable energy market in Colombia. Founded in 2011, DUE Capital and Services is a firm working since its inception in the energy sector; firstly, in the hydrocarbon E&P sector in Latin America, and since 2016 on the development and structuring of solar photovoltaic investment projects in Colombia.
This project’s impact will be social, economic, and ecological. Its social aspect will solicit paid labor of a dozen local people for logistics, civil engineering, structural installation, and electrical connections. This project’s impact will be social, economic, and ecological. Its social aspect will solicit paid labor of a dozen local people for logistics, civil engineering, structural installation, and electrical connections.
As for ecological development, the focus will be on waste management, recycling procedures, and assets maintenance. The project would also greatly impact Greenhouse Gas emissions, avoiding a release of 1.75 T of CO2-eq/year. This contributes to a substantial effect on global warming mitigation.

We invite you to discover the full descriptions of the winning projects here, and to support them in the deployment of their ideas.
Elum Energy warmly thanks the partnering organizations that took part in this initiative and helped us bringing awareness around impactful microgrid projects:
As part of the launch of our new ES controller and the webinar day, Elum Energy will be organising the “Microgrid Impact Challenge”, that will invite worldwide solar microgrid energy companies to come up with impactful ideas for sustainable projects when using an ES controller, while matching Elum Energy values.
The Microgrid challenge is an international competition open to all. Elum and its partner will select the 3 best microgrid projects with a strong social and economic impact and award them with various gifts.
An ePowerControl ES controller
1000$ in Elum Gift Cards
500$ in Elum Gift Cards
To participate you will need to come up with a solar PV + BESS project, that has a high social and/or environmental impact and that needs a PV+BESS controller such as the ePowerControl ES.
This challenge is open to everyone! The size of your company or your geographical location are not important. What matters is your project.
At the end of each session of Elum energy webinar, the ES Keynote, the moderators will announce the game contest followed by an announcement of the terms and conditions.
Registration will remain open for 3 weeks to allow participants to develop their project.
Send your project9th February 2022All participants will have to sent their sustainable project in line with Elum Energy values.
In the questionnaire that will allow their registration, they will have to answer several questions and the answers will be examined by the jury who will decide on the relevance of the project.
9th March 2022The deliberation of the applications will last for 7 days after the end of the inscriptions.
The jury will be composed of Elum Energy’s employees and representatives of partnering associations.
16th March 2022A new concept of showing content in your web page with more interactive way.
DISCOVER THE WINNERS17th March 2022Elum ePowerControl Energy Storage (ES) supervises the energy distribution of the microgrid + BESS to optimize solar PV production and grid costs while maintaining power reliability.
EpowerControl ES is a plug-and-play controller that is easy to commission, thanks to Elum’s eConf, our in-house commissioning web interface. EpowerControl ES is suitable for islanded microgrids, grid-tied applications, or hybrid applications.
