To address this problem, many facility owners have begun implementing solar systems to increase local generation and reduce their reliance on diesel generators. The objective is to ensure a continuous power supply through the use of solar panels in addition to generators.
In this case, these structures must find a solution that allows the solar panels to operate in parallel with the diesel generators in order to meet the energy demand in the most optimal way possible.
Solar-diesel hybrid solar systems cannot operate properly without a controller. It is necessary to use a solar-diesel (SD) controller to provide power, especially during a power outage. It allows the solar panels and the generator to operate simultaneously.
In the case of microgrids, it is also imperative that a single energy source forms the network. This means that this component sets the voltage and frequency of the entire network. When multiple power sources are connected together, multiple protection components are placed in the network to prevent problems such as low frequency, current flow distortion, and power flow reversal. The SD controller is essential in such scenarios because it detects which energy source forms the network (grid or diesel generators).
In the event of a breakdown, the SD controller reduces photovoltaic production to ensure a minimum load of the generator set (around 30% of rated power) and prevent the risk of current reversal.
When solar generation capacity is added to reduce fuel consumption without adding a storage battery, the output power of the PV inverters must be controlled to allow optimal operation with the generators while avoiding power inversion of the solar energy to generators.
