The Context

ePowerControl PPC became the energy management system of an off-grid solar power plant in southern Morocco.

The plant operates in two modes: BESS Prime as the primary mode and Genset Prime as backup. The PPC enables seamless, automatic transitions between modes, ensuring continuous power supply and system stability. PV ramp rate control in both modes limits rapid fluctuations, protecting components and maintaining stable operation.

In BESS Prime mode, the Battery Energy Storage System is the main grid-forming source. PV optimization maximizes solar energy based on load, system constraints, and battery state of charge. BESS charge control maintains optimal state of charge and extends battery life. PV dispatch manages inverter output to meet demand within operational limits.

In Genset Prime mode, diesel generators form the grid, activated during low battery, high load, maintenance, or abnormal conditions. BESS ramp rate control smooths battery power changes. PV dispatch adjusts solar output according to load and genset limits. Genset minimum loading prevents wet stacking, improves fuel efficiency, and prolongs engine life.
