The Context

One of Africa’s largest off-grid power plants is located in Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It serves more than 2500 households and small to medium-sized enterprises.

In order to reduce diesel consumption, Nuru decided to integrate supply from a solar PV, BESS storage and hydro electric production. Elum’s ePowerControl MC has been added to the system in connection with the hydro line, enabling the plant to prioritise its energy sources:

  1. Solar (PV): First priority when available
  2. Battery Energy Storage System (BESS): Second priority when available
  3. Hydro line: Third priority when available
  4. Diesel generator (Genset): Fourth priority, used only when hydro is unavailable

The site is also equipped with ePowerMonitor, a monitoring platform that allows remote performance analysis, consumption supervision
and alarm notification.
