Utility-scale Use Case BESS Project Optimizes Peak Shaving for a Mine in Peru

Application
Injection control on the Enedis HTA network

The context

  • Product: ePowerControl PPC

La Poderosa Mine project is first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for peak shaving in Peru.

The primary aim is to optimize electricity usage by strategically charging batteries during low-demand periods and discharging them during peak hours within the National Interconnected System, resulting in significant benefits across multiple fronts.

ePowerControl PPC has been integrated into the system. Using a third-party machine learning algorithm, it accurately predicts high-demand periods, allowing the EMS to discharge the BESS. This action offsets grid usage during peak times, saving on costs and diesel consumption. The BESS then gradually recharges during low-demand periods in preparation for the next high-demand phase. This control optimization results in reduced expenses by preventing overcharging during peak hours

The results:

  • Annual savings of over $1.2 million for mining operation
  • A system lifespan of 16 years
  • Decreased thermal energy consumption by over 1,460 MWh per year.
  • Layout:
    PCS 4 MW (Huawei)
  • BESS – 8 MWh
